Description and Basic Information ::

The green and white trains and buses of the GO Transit system carry passengers out to the suburbs at the edge of the Toronto “mega-city.” Speedy, comfortable trains travel frequently during the business rush hours of morning and evening while buses pick up the slack during the off-hours, weekends and holidays. There are six different lines serving 49 stations along the various arms of the system. Go Transit travels to numerous locations outside of the city, including Ajax, Aurora, Brampton, Burlington, Georgetown, Hamilton, Markham, Newmarket, Oakville, Pickering, Port Credit, and Whitby. Ticket prices are calculated on the number of zones covered. The minimum rate is $2.45, maximum oneway is $11.30. Most fares are in the $5-$8 range. The GO system is wheelchair accessible. The special adapted cars are marked with a large blue and white wheelchair pictogram (go figure). Passengers using mobility devices pay the same fare as able-bodied passengers, and do not require a reservation. Special tickets include The Day Pass and The Group Pass. The former is sold at the cost of two single fares and it allows one person unlimited rides between two specified zones throughout the day of purchase -- ideal for day trips and exploring. Group passes are similarly convenient and they allow as many as five passengers, with a maximum of two persons over the age of 18, to travel throughout the day. GO Transit information is available by telephone 24 hours a day, through an automated system. Operators are available to answer more complex questions from 7am to 10am Monday to Friday and 9am to 7pm Saturday, Sunday and holidays. |
